The Brief: What kind of designer do you aspire to be?
Through this project I aim to develop an understanding of who I am as a designer, develop my communication skills and technical elements of my design portfolio.
I wanted to express my interest in how design can impact the wellbeing of a community. My goal was to redesign Bethel Chapel to be a place which enables people to feel included in, and important to their city. I was born and raised in Sheffield, so for this project I made sure my decisions were informed by data, and not just my experience of what Sheffield needs.
I designed a community bank, which is home to, and supports a bustling market place and unique workshops for local Sheffield businesses.
My idea is that local people will be customers of the bank and any profits will be reinvested into the people of Sheffield, offering affordable loans to savers, start up funding for small start ups and also financial education for people with limited resources.
I wanted to design a way which communities outside of the city centre, could access the revenue from increased footfall created by the Heart of The City regeneration scheme.

BRIEF + RESEARCH
Initially I set about sketching the space and initial ideas, writing my brief for the project informed by carrying out historical, client and site research.

UNDERSTANDING THE SITE THROUGH MAKING
I made a site model using digital data and routed on the CNC router, then used this to create a aluminium version using the process of sand casting. This process helped me to understand the historical, cultural and personal connection people have to Cambridge St.
PRECEDENTS + LOOK AND FEEL
I researched projects which have influenced my design decisions and created a look and feel board to communicate my vision for the project.
