DESIGNER
LEISURE + HOSPITALITY
2nd Year/ Semester 1
Location: The Mowbray, 118 Mowbray Street, Sheffield
Client: Youth Hostel Association
THE BRIEF\ How do you design a meaningful experience?
I identified parallels between young people of today, my clients target audience, and the historical makers of Mowbray Street, in their activism and pursuit of cleaner air.
Inspired by their activism I designed a youth hostel which aims to offer respite, inspiration and hope. Being surrounded by materials which are grown, recycled and sustainable, to allow users to enjoy their experience, without the burden of guilt which climate anxiety induces.
RESEARCH

Research of the sites industrial past and it's demise.
Material research of grown material Cellulose, which I grew.
Material research of Alginate
CONCEPT

To develop a deeper understanding of my concept I began
making organic structures
I made a series of objects to explore the atmosphere which biomaterials could create in an interior setting.

This is a concept visual of the site, which I tried to portray the industrial history of the site and the spirit of people who live there.
DEVELOPMENT

I decided to use the biomaterial to create an organic, responsive roof over the first floor accommodation, which would provide insulation and create a unique atmosphere.
Look + Feel of the communal dining area using recycled, grown and sustainable materials.
